The Book
The Character
Personality:
Something you have to remember is that Carrie White has been emotionally, physically and mentally abused all her life. Her mother is highly religious and brought her up on the belief that to be female was to be evil in the eyes of the lord. She was never allowed to grow up as a normal child and was frequently locked in a closet for nearly days at a time as a punishment. Because of her mother’s strange religious ways, and the way she forced Carrie to dress, in old fashioned and frumpy clothes, Carrie was also bulled and mocked at school ever since she was five years old.
Because of all the abuse Carrie is a quiet and incredibly shy girl. She hides behind her hair whenever she can and tries to remain out of people’s way. If people notice her, it’s only to make fun of her after all. She’s the scapegoat, the person that everyone in the school to make fun off. She knows that and is untrusting of most people. Especially now, after the prom, which she believes was all a trick. Carrie is a sad and quiet girl that people only pay attention to if they want to make fun of her, or make her life even worse. She believes that all the people in the prom were in on the “joke” because it seemed to her that they were all laughing.
Carrie isn’t a bad person. She wants to be normal, but she still loves her mother somewhat. She tells Tommy that she has to come home early because her mother will worry. In the piece taken from the book by Sue Snell, one of the survivors, she points this out. Carrie, after her prom would have been happy with a ten cent hamburger instead of a fancy meal because she didn’t want to worry her mother. Carrie is just a girl who has gone through too much in her life, the prom disaster is just the final thing that makes her snap. And even then she only wanted to spray them all with water and teach them a lesson. However two boys will electrocuted and watching them die broke something inside Carrie and she turned on the town.
Carrie is a very lonely girl. She’s never had a real friend, and every time she tries to join in, she has to work extra hard and it fails. One year she begged and pleaded to go to bible camp, saved up all her money and finally convinced her mother to let her go. She came back a week early because the children were so horrid to her, even almost drowning her in the lake water.
It is because of necessity that Carrie is also a very private and independent person. She knows that she can never expect anyone to help her with anything. She saved up for that bible camp mentioned before, by doing sewing for people as he mother never gave her any money herself. It is mentioned that even the rocking chair in her room she bought herself. She also tried in small ways to be normal and rebel from her mothers tyrannical grip on her life. Once she realizes that she has powers she starts to practice with them, using them to force her mother to let her live a normal life as best she can.
In the few moments of the prom we actually see the Carrie behind the mask of self hatred and isolation. She makes a few jokes, starts to get along with people when they are not tormenting her. It shows that taken out of the highly toxic and abusive environment, if people only gave her a chance, she could have been happy and fit in with people. She’s just stuck in a horrible situation, that in the end, finally breaks her.

She is alone.
Well not alone, but no one knows her here.
Momma isn't here. They aren't here. The people here don't know anything about her and for the first time in a long while she's glad. She doesn't have to be stupid Prayin' Carrie here. No one knows her. No one knows her to throw things at her, no one knows her to insult her, to hurt her, to tease her,
(to kill her)
She is trapped, being watched by cameras that refuse to stay broken but she is free too. Because for the first time she has a bed with a pillow. She can wear what she wants and she doesn't have to see any of them again.
She is alone but not. Trapped but not. Free but not. She is all of those things
